New Data Security Bill seeks uniformity in protection of consumers’ personal information

“New National Data Security Bill Coming to Your State Soon.” That should be the bumper sticker coming out of Congress and its efforts on the most current version of a national data security law. With continuing focus on cybersecurity and data breaches in Washington as well as the media, it’s fairly certain in 2015 a bill will be signed. The question is what will it contain and what does it mean for business as far as compliance and cost are concerned. If the law specifies the covered entities will be required to maintain specific security standards as was the case with HIPAA, the cost could be high.
